LeBron James Needs to “Win Something that Matters”?

Yahoo sports writer Adrian Wojnawroski says that Lebron needs to win something that matters. Win something that matters? He’s won back-to-back MVP’s at the age of 25, something neither Jordan, Kobe, Shaq, etc, has ever done. He won an Eastern Conference title at 22 years of age (on a terribly overmatched team), something Jordan couldn’t even imagine.

Not to sound crazy (as I know the status quo is to think a “team championship” is the most important “individual accomplishment” a player can win) but those MVP’s are a whole lot more important and validating than an NBA Title.

Was John “Spider” Salley better than Barkley? Was Samaki Walker better than Karl Malone? For goodness sakes, was Bob Cousy better than John Stockton? No on all counts!

Now, I agree that Lebron will have to win a title to be considered one of the five greatest players of all time and will have to win at least 6 to be considered the GOAT but to say he has never won anything that mattered is ludicrous.

At 25 years of age, Michael Jordan had still not accomplished anything of merit for the most part and couldn’t even sniff a conference championship. Kobe was different but Kobe had a prime Shaq so there is no real comparison.

Another thing that needs to be noted is that the media, Dan Gilbert and the entire city of Cleveland as a whole is being extremely self-righteous and silly to even expect Lebron to lead this Cavs team to a title. They simply are not that strong of a team!

The second best player on the Cavs team is an over-the-hill Shaq, the third is a streaky, defensively challenged Antawn Jamison, the fourth is a streaky, defensively challenged Mo Williams and the fifth is an offensvely challenged, hustle role player in Varejo.

Compare this to the Lakers, Magic and Celtics (the real “Big 3″).

The Lakers’ second best player is all-world power forward Pau Gasol, their third best player is do-everything swiss army knife Lamar Odom, their fourth is dominant when healthy and imposing when not true center Andrew Bysnum and their fifth is defensive monster and their best percentage 3-point shooter, Ron Artest.

The Magic’s second best player is all-star scoring machine Vince Carter, their third is matchup nightmare Rashard Lewis, their fourth is point guard dynamo Jameer Nelson and their 5th, or should I say fifth through seventh is a gang of great role players.

The Celtics’ second, third and fourth best players are all sure-fire first ballot HOF’ers in Garnett, Pierce and Allen while their 5th best player is a tough, defensive true center in Kendrick Perkins.

The cavaliers simply are not that good of a basketball team. Sure they are a great regular season team (thanks to Lebron) but they are not built to hang with the true big boy teams of the NBA … and lebron knows this. For the cavs to win the title Lebron would have to average a near triple double every series with at least 30 points per game. Dwight Howard just has to rebound, swat some shots and make a couple of baskets a game. Kobe just needs to inspire his teammates and make at leas 40% of his shots. Rondo just needs to control the tempo and get his team mates involved. These are not at all the samr thing that lebron is called on to do.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are not constructed to win a championship as-is … and Lebron knows it, which is why I fully expect him to sign with the New Jersey Nets (if they land the #1 pick), New York Knicks or Chicago Bulls this off-season.

PLAYOFFS – CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS (2009 NFL Season Predictions)

VIKINGS over SAINTS

Why: The Vikings defense that’s why. I still believe the Saints defense is little more than smoke and mirrors and if Brett Favre can avoid a multi-interception game, the Vikings should have this game in the bag. If this game were played in Sota, I’d say Vikes by 13. If it were being played on a neutral field, I’d say Vikes by 10. However, even in the Superdome, I’ll say Vikings over the Saints by a score of 30-27.

COLTS over JETS

Why: The Jets are the real deal with a dominating defense and overpowering running game, however Sanchez is still a rookie and after two solid playoff games he is do for a stinker. The real reason the Colts will win however is once again “Peyton Manning”. The greatest QB of all-time will advance to his second Super Bowl; book it! Colts over Jets by a score of 23-9.

Divisional Playoff Record: 2-2 (The Jets victory was a shocker but perhaps shouldn’t have been. The Chargers have a one dimensional offense while the Jets feature a dominating defense. Defense won that game and I expect it to to be the reason why both the Colts and Vikings advance to the Super Bowl this weekend.)

Record to Date: 185-79

PLAYOFFS – DIVISIONAL ROUND (2009 NFL Season Predictions)

VIKINGS over COWBOYS

Why: This should be a tough game and it would not surprise me at all if the Cowboys win and win big. However, the Vikings haven’t lost a game all year in the Metrodome and the Cowboys may be in store for a bad game after a great December and opening round playoff win. Give me the Vikings over the Cowboys by a score of 24-20.

CARDINALS over SAINTS

Why: The Saints are an overrated finesse team that is about to be exposed by a under-rated smash in you the mouth, high scoring, defending NFC Champion Cardinals team. Cards over Saints by a score of 34-26.

COLTS over RAVENS

Why: Four time MVP Peyton Manning, that’s why. Colts over Ravens 20-16.

CHARGERS over JETS

Why: The Chargers are the hottest team in football and the Jets are riding a high from upsetting the Bengals. Translation … the Jets are about to get smacked. Colts over Jets by a score of 30-13.

Wild Card Playoff Record: 3-1 (I actually picked the Cards to beat the Packers but switched my pick at the last second when I heard Anquan Boldin wasn’t going to be able to play … perhaps the greatest playoff game in NFL history ensued and my beloeved cardinals got the victory in OT. I may have lost the pick, but I am thrilled Warner and the boys pulled out the win!

Record to Date: 183-77 (A 70% regular season and now a 75% start to the playoffs … nice.)

RAVENS over RAIDERS

CHARGERS over REDSKINS

TITANS over SEAHAWKS

JETS over BENGALS

Week Sixteen Record: 10-6 (Decent record in a tough to predict week. This week should be even more difficult as depending on what happens in early games, certain teams may rest their starters, etc. For example, the Chargers have literally nothing to play for and could field a team of practice players and ball boys against the Redskins for all I know.)

Record to Date: 168-72 (A 6 game lead over the next best yahoo expert with 1 regular season weeks to go … sounds good to me, especially since this could be one wild week to close the regular season.)

New Jersey Nets … 2010-11 NBA Champions?

The New Jersey Nets could become the biggest losers in NBA history this year and become next year’s NBA Champs and the next great NBA dynasty!

There is a great possibility that the Nets, due to having the worst record in the NBA this year, will win the “John Wall Lottery” and be able to draft the best PG prospect since Jason Kidd in next year’s NBA Draft.

There is also a very strong possibility that if they do land John Wall, Lebron James will want to come join him, Brook Lopez, Terrence Williams, Courtney Lee, Chris Douglas-Roberts and friend Jay-Z in Jersey (soon to be Brooklyn).

The key to making this happen is to make some ingenious trades before the deadline this year.

What trades you ask? Allow me :-)

The aforementioned Brook Lopez, Terrence Williams, Courtney Lee and Chris Douglas Roberts are keepers and players that would fit well with King James.

Bobby Simmons, Tony Battie, Rafer Alston, Trenton Hassle and Jarvis Hayes all have expiring contracts and awill simply not be re-signed next year.

Josh Boone and Sean Williams are young players with expiring contracts that could be dealt if need be, re-signed in the offseason to inexpensive deals or simply not re-signed come next year to reduce the team’s payroll.

Keyon Dooling, Eduardo Najera and Yi Jianlin are three players with non-expiring deals that the Nets need to get rid of before the offseason in order to make a legitimate run at Lebron James and a host of running mates.

That leaves one wildcard and his name is Devin Harris. Devin Harris is the key to the Nets rebuilding plans as he is the one player that if traded could alow the likes of Dooling and Najera to be traded as well.

All of the above said, below is what the Nets should do to lure King James to Jersey and start the process to becoming the next great dynasty in the NBA:

Nets Trade: Devin Harris, Keyon Dooling, Eduardo Najera, Tony Battie and 2nd round draft pick

Rockets Trade: Tracy McGrady, Kyle Lowery, Joey Dorsey and 1st round draft pick

McGrady would simply not be re-signed in the offseason as he has an expiring contract, while Lowery would be re-signed inexpensively and Dorsey is on the books for just under a million dollars in 2010-11.

Nets Trade: Yi Jianlin and Jarvis Hayes

Warriors Trade: Raja Bell and a 1st round draft pick (Top 10 protected this year)

The above trades will leave the Nets with a roster for next season as follows:

PG: Kyle Lowery

SG: Courtney Lee / Terrence Williams

SF: Chris Douglas-Roberts

PF: Joey Dorsey

C: Brook Lopez / Josh Boone / Sean Williams

Projected Draft Picks: #1 and #20 in the first round

Cap Room: Appriximately $39 miilion

Needs: Starting Point Guard, Small forward and Power forward, various role players and a new coach

With $33 million in cap space the Nets could easily land both Lebron James and Chris Bosh and with the two draft first round draft picks they could easily draft a PG/PF combo of Wildcat running mates John Wall and Demarcus Cousins! On top of this amazing haul, they could add a solid veteran combo guard such as current Net Rafer Alston with their Vet Minimum contract option.

This brings us to the 2010-11 NBA Champion New Jersey Nets Roster:

PG: John Wall / Kyle Lowery / Rafer Alston

SG: Courtney Lee / Terrence Williams

SF: Lebron James /Chris Douglas-Roberts

PF: Chris Bosh / Demarcus Cousins / Joey Dorsey

C: Brook Lopez / Josh Boone / Sean Williams

The above is a lineup fit for the NBA’S next great dynasty, though they’ll have to knock of the Lakers first!

The Florida Gators got Jobbed due to Gutless Voters!

The Florida Gators should be playing the Alabama Crimson Tide in the BCS Championship Game!

There, I said it.

Now, please allow me to explain.

Should the Florida gators team that played the Crimson Tide last weekend be playing for the BCS Championship? No. However, even that team I am quite sure would destroy the Texas Longhorns, Cincinnatti Bearcats, Texas Christian Horned Frogs and Boise State Smurfs! However, the current Florida Gators team is not the same team that played Alabama in the SEC Championship game, they are a more motivated, hungry and angry team that has its star defensive end Carlos Dunlap back in the lineup!

The one loss, Carlos Dunlap lead Florida Gators team is easily the second best team in the country, if not the best (I honestly think they would beat the Tide in a rematch)!

The sad thing is, I think all the voters and coaches and media know this. I think if you were to poll all the voters out there who ranked Texas #2 behind Alabama and told them that if they had to pick who would win between the once beaten Gators team with Carlos Dunlap that now is getting ready to play the Bearcats rather than the Tide, and the Texas Longhorns, with their house on the line, 99% of those voters would put their money, or house as it were, on the Gators!

Simply put, the voters chickened out and blew this one. Instead of voting for who they really believed to be the second best team in the country they took the safe way out and voted for the Longhorns. What a shame.

I’m now getting ready to watch the Tide demolish the overrated Longhorns by 20+ points in the BCS Championship game, the Gators embarass the Bearcats by 20+ points and TCU win a forgettable game against Boise State in a rematch of one of last year’s bowl games. What a shame.

I should be getting ready to see a furious and highly motivated Carlos Dunlap lead Gators team pull off a 27-23 upset in a great BCS Championship game against the Crimson Tide, a “win one for the gipper” inspired Cincinnatti Bearcats team win a thrilling 48-45 shootout against Boise State and Kellen “I deserved to win the Heisman .. at least more than anyone not named Tebow” Moore and a fantastic, inspiring battle of the long star states two best teams in Texas and Texas Christian University, a game which I would be won by David (TCU) and not Goliath (Texas) 26-24.

What a shame!

TIM TEBOW STILL DESERVES THE HEISMAN

I am just as disgusted today as I was last week. The sports talking heads are now predicting Colt McCoy, Mark Ingram and Toby Gearhart will all finish higher than Tim Tebow in the Hesiman voting. What nonsense is this? What is the world coming to?

Colt McCoy had a far inferior season to Tebow against far inferior competition, period.

Toby Gearhart had a great individual season but is no more deserving of the Heisman than is Case Keenum or Freddy Barnes!

Mark Ingram had a worse season than Gearhart but played against superior competition and on a far superior team. However, Ingram is no more deserving than Gearhart and honestly is less deserving than the likes of Kellen Moore of Boise State!

The talking heads have jumped off the Tebow bandwagon due to the Gators losing last week’s SEC Championship game to Alabama. However, look at what Tebow did in that game! Tebow was basically the entire offense for the Gators and as I said before, once again starred at both QB and RB. Had he played the way Colt McCoy did in his conference championship game the Gators would have been destroyed 63-0 by the Tide!

Tim Tebow had a far superior conference championship performance than Colt McCoy and should still win the Hesiman trophy, hands down!

TIM TEBOW for HEISMAN!!!

tebow-heisman.jpg image by kurtenblog

I am shocked and a bit disgusted that so many columnists and sports talking heads are endorsing the likes of Colt McCoy, let alone Mark Ingram or Toby Gearhart for Hesiman. What a joke!

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the fact that Colt McCoy has had an outstanding career and especially the fact that he has not only had a wonderful senior season this year but that he, like Tebow, is a devout Christian and follower of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ of Nazareth, however he is not deserving of this year’s Hesiman trophy, at least not as deserving as Mr. Tebow is!

As for the two aformetioned running backs, Mark Ingram and Toby Gearhart, they are even less deserving. Gearhart has had a great individual year, should undoubtedly win the Doak Walker award and also should most definitely finish ahead of Mark Ingram in the Heisman trophy race, but neither player should finish higher than Colt McCoy who impacts a game far more from his position of quarterback than wither of these two players could hope to from the runningback position, let alone higher than Tim Tebow.

The above said, this year’s Heisman trophy race is a two man race between McCopy and Tebow, yet only one man (Tebow) should even be considered for the top spot.

Tim Tebow has a much higher passer rating (160.7 to 152.9), far better yards per pass attempt (8.9 to 7.7), far better TD to INT ratio  (4.25/1 to 3/1), higher percentage of TD’s per pass attempt (7% to 6.25%) and lower percentage of INT’s per pass attempt (1.64% to 2.08%)! That said, in merely pure pocket QB terms, Tim Tebow should win the Hesiman over Colt McCoy and we all know that running is Tebow’s strong point!

When one factors in the rushing aspect, Tebow stands head and shoulders above Colt McCoy as the Heisman favorite.

While Colt McCoy has put up respectable rushing numbers, thanks in large part to one huge game against Texas A&M’s porous run defense, his numbers pale in comparison to Tebow’s. McCoy has rushed for 368 yards and 2 TD’S while Tebow has rushed for a whopping 796 yards and 13 TD’S. You may want to look at that stat line again. Colt McCoy is a great QB who can run now and then. Tim Tebow is a QB and RB all at the same time; the guy is basically playing two positions on the football field!

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Tim Tebow plays in the dominating and rugged SEC while McCoy plays in the almost defense-less Big 12. That is a huge difference folks.

For the same reason no one is talking about Kellen Moore (who has better stats than either McCoy or Tebow and is leading an unbeaten team to a BCS bowl appearence) winning the Hesiman, no one should seriously be considering voting for McCoy over Tebow. Simply put, Colt McCoy is playing and putting up inferior statistics in an inferior conference.

Giving McCoy the Hesiman trophy this year over Tebow would be like giving the NFL MVP Award to the best QB in the CFL over Brett Favre, even though the CFL QB has inferior statistics! It would be that preposterous!

Imagine for a moment, if the QB’S qere simply switched. Tim Tebow would be running the show in Texas and Colt McCoy would be running the spread offense in Florida. If such were the case I can honestly see Tebow throwing for close to McCoy yards, but more TD’S and less intereceptions, while amassing over 1,000 yards rushing and close to 20 TD’S, all the while dominating the competion. If that were happening there would be no discussion as to who should win the Hesiman whatsoever. On the flip side I could see McCoy throwing for a few more yards and TD’S in Florida than Tebow has, but far more interceptions as well, rushing for far fewer yards than he has at Texas and worst of all, losing 2-3 games as well as this weekend’s SEC championship game.

All of the above said … TIM TEBOW IS THIS YEAR’S HESIMAN TROPHY WINNER, HANDS DOWN!

IT’S NCAA TOURNAMENT TIME !!!!!!!

The NCAA Men’s basketball tournament field is set and it looks like a dandy!

In the MidWest there are two extremely interesting first round games: Arizona (12) vs. Utah (5) and USC (10) vs. Boston College (7). Give me the underdogs in both of those games!

We should also be able to watch two excellent 3rd round games: Lousiville vs. Wake Forest and Michigan State vs. Kansas. I’ll take the favorites in those games by the way.

The West looks to me to be the most uninteresting region by far. I do not see Memphis or Connecticut having any difficulty reaching the Regional Finals, where I expect Connecticut to prevail and advance to face Louisville in the Final Four and defeat the Cardinals by at least 7 points.

In the East region, a second round matchup between Villanova and UCLA should be a fun game to watch with UCLA prevailing. However like the West regiuon, I do not see the top two seeds, in this case Pittsburgh or Duke, having any real trouble advancing to the Regional Finals, where I expect Pitt to dominate the Dukies and win by at least 10.

The South region is extremely interesting in my mind. While I don’t see North Carolina having any trouble steamrolling into the Final Four where they will meet Pittsburgh and we will all be treated to a Tyson Hansborough vs. Dejuan Blair slug fest (give me Blair by a TKO but North Carolina by 4 points), there look to be many interesting games on the slate. In the first round Clemson vs. Michigan looks promising and I would not be surprised to see the Wolverines pull an upset whatsoever. In the second round Syracuse vs. Arizona State should be a great game with the Cuse prevailing but James Harden cementing his stature as a top 5 pick in the upcoming NBA draft (where he would be a perfect fit for the Clippers by the way). In the Regional Semis a Syracuse vs. Oklahoma game would also be wonderfully entertaining and I would again expect the Orangemen to pull out a tight victory but the best player on the court to be from the opposing team with Blake Griffin dominating this time around.

So, who do I like to win it all? Give me North Carolina over Connecticut 80-74.

As for who I like as the top player from each region, here it goes:

MIDWEST: Earl Clark

WEST: Hasheem Thabeet

EAST: Dejuan Blair

SOUTH: Tyler Hansborough

FINAL FOUR MVP: Tyler Hansborough

It’s tournament time … enjoy!

Steroids Controversy is Spelled H-y-p-o-c-r-i-s-y!

Gimme a “H”. Gimme a “Y”. Gimme a “P”. Do you know where this is going? My guess is that you have no clue.

The three letters above start the word “hypocrite”. However the question is, “who is the hypocrite” in this modern day MLB steroid controversy. Is it Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Major League Baseball itself, the consumer, the agents; who?

The answer is “all of the above”.

Of course Alex Rodriguez was a hypocrite when he told Katie Couric that he never felt inferior on the baseball field and never was even tempted to use steroids. However the bigger hypocrite is the sports show talking head that says these players should be banned from the Hall of Fame, branded the cheaters they are, etc.

My real questions about this modern day steroid controversy are:

What’s the big deal?

Why is doing steroids “bad”?

Why is taking a substance that “enhances performance” considered “bad”?

The most common answer one will hear when asking these questions is that taking performance enhancing drugs like steroids and HGH is bad because it gives the modern players and “unfair advantage” that past greats did not have and therefore may inflate their season and or career stats.

So, let me get this straight. The reason taking performance enhancing drugs is bad is because the older players did not have access to them and/or because they may give the modern players and unfair advantage and pad their stats?

Abstaining from beer, eating organic foods and hitting the weight room once in a blue moon is also “performance enhancing” and something that an old-time great like babe Ruth never did. Does that mean modern players should not be allowed to do such because it gives them an unfair advantage over the Babe?

Taking herbs like Echinacea, Saint John’s Wort, etc could also be considered “performance enhancing”. Why are they not illegal?

Modern day players have access to top of the line exercise equipment, personal trainers, medical staffs, etc that old-time greats could only dream of. Does this not automatically give all modern day players an “unfair advantage” and a slew of “performance enhancing” items?

I do not believe that steroids is a big deal in regards to the “performance enhancing” or “unfair advantage” arguments and think both arguments are utter foolishness and hypocrisy at its best.

If all modern day players need to be on an even keel with the Babe, then they should all be made to drink to much, eat to much, exercise less, party more, etc!

Now, the only other real argument against modern day players taking steroids is that the steroids themselves are harmful to the athlete. However this argument is also hypocritical and falls apart when weighed against common practice in all sports.

Why aren’t players called cheaters and condemned to be banned from the Hall of Fame for smoking cigarettes, getting drunk, eating trans fats, etc, all of which could be even more dangerous to the human body then taking steroids a few times.

Why are NFL players praised as being true team players and “taking one for the team” when they get a shot of Novocain and play on a badly injured ankle but MLB players are considered cheaters for taking a substance that speeds up the natural healing process, or for taking steroids to become stronger and/or faster players to help their teams? If anyone was truly a “team player” or taking one for the team, it is the athlete that takes steroids, knowing full well that while it may help him fuel his teams victory, it will have damaging effects on his body.

All of the above said, I most definitely am not condoning athletes taking steroids, far from it. I personally wished all athletes along with all human beings would eat all-natural and organic foods that are good for their bodies and abstain from harmful foods, drinks and drugs. However, I aslso recognize hypocrisy when I see it!

WHERE WILL T.O. GO?

So the Dallas Cowboys finally had enough of Terrel Owens eh? Well, I can’t say that I’m surprised. If anyone was a team cancer it just might be Mr. Owens. However, while he may not be the best teammate to play with or a QB’S best friend, he is still a bonafide superstar wide receiver and a player capable of hauling in 90 passes for 1,200 plus yards and 10 plus TD’S so I doubt he will be out of work long.

The above said, here is my list of the most likely destinations for Mr. Owens:

1.) CINCINNATI BENGALS

They need a receiver and if they can deal with Ocho Cinco and Chris Henry they should be able to deal with T.O., plus the Palmer to T.O. connection could be dynamic!

2.) JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

They need a #1 receiver badly; nuff said.

3.) TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

An Antonio Bryant and T.O. combo would be lethal, both on the field and off the field!

4.) CAROLINA PANTHERS

An Steve Smith and T.O. combo would be lethal, both on the field and off the field!

5.) NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

If this happens Mr. Brady could throw for 5,500 yards and 60 TD’S next year!

6.) INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

T.O. would make Peyton forget Marvin Harrison in a hurry and even T.O. would probably know better than to try and throw Manning under the buss the way he did McNabb!

7.) CHICAGO BEARS

It’s not as if the Bears have a beloved franchise QB anyways, so would they really care if T.O. causes problems for their QB’S as long as he puts up 1,000+ yards and 10+ TD’S? NO!

8.) SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

T.O. actually seems like a pretty good fit for this team opposite the newly signed possession receiver extraordinaire T.J.H.

9.) OAKLAND RAIDERS

I could definitely see Al Davis taking a chance on T.O., but would T.O. take a chance on the Raiders?

10.) DETROIT LIONS

Can you imagine if the Lions draft Matt Stafford #1 in the draft and then hand him Calvin Johnson and T.O. to throw the ball too? Talk about a happy rookie QB … at least until T.O. throws a fit because Calvin Johnson is accumulating better stats then he is and calls Matt Stafford a “loser” when the team misses out on the playoffs.

Arizona Cardinal Kurt Warner’s Amazing Story

Warner’s super comeback rooted in faith, hard work

By: Bob Baum, AP Sports Writer

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-superbowl-warner&prov=ap&type=lgns

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Four years ago Kurt Warner was having a hard time finding a job.

No matter that he had been to two Super Bowls and won one of them, or that he’d been an NFL and Super Bowl MVP.

The perception was that he was washed up, finished, that his storybook career was approaching an ignominious end.

Then the 37-year-old quarterback wrote the most amazing chapter of all with a season that might cement him a spot on football’s Hall of Fame, especially if he can lead the Arizona Cardinals, of all teams, to a Super Bowl victory Sunday over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“Hopefully, it would recognize him for exactly what he is—one of the best players to ever play his position,” his coach, Ken Whisenhunt, said.

Warner’s story is rooted in a deep faith and a persistent drive to be the very best he can be as a person and a football player.

“My approach is hoping that every player that I’ve played with, every place that I’ve been, that in some way, shape or form, I leave my stamp on those people and those places,” he said at the Super Bowl media day on Tuesday. “That’s what I want my legacy to be. The football stuff, that’s all gravy.”

The football stuff impresses his Pittsburgh counterpart, Ben Roethlisberger.

“He’s gone through so much and done so much,” Roethlisberger said. “To me, I love watching him play. He throws an unbelievable pass and—you know what?—I have a lot of respect for him and the way he plays the game.”

Warner’s return to the top is a dominant theme leading up to this Super Bowl, just as it was in his 1999 season.

“Most times when you do something great, it’s not overnight,” he said. “It’s not something that comes easy. It comes with a lot of hard work, a lot of time, a lot of commitment.”

The comment pretty much sums up his life.

Warner played for Northern Iowa, but didn’t start until he was a senior. Then he tried out for the Green Bay Packers, but was quickly released. So it was back to Cedar Rapids, where he got a job stocking shelves for a supermarket.

His route from there to the NFL included three seasons with the Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football League and two years with the Amsterdam Admirals in NFL Europe.

Before the 1999 season, Warner was a backup with the Rams when starter Trent Green was injured. Coach Dick Vermeil turned to Warner, and the result was one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history.

In the next three years, despite missing five games because of injury, Warner threw for 12,612 yards and 98 touchdowns. There was the Super Bowl championship season and the near-miss against New England in 2001.

But injuries to his finger and hand in 2002 signaled the beginning of the end of his days in St. Louis.

He lost the starting job to Marc Bulger and was released by the Rams after the 2003 season.

“I never felt like the physical part of my game ever disappeared,” Warner said. “I felt like that was always there. The one question I had when I left St. Louis was would I ever get the opportunity to display that again.”

He signed a one-year deal with the New York Giants, but was replaced by rookie Eli Manning 10 games into the season after an awful game against the Cardinals.

At 33, Warner found no serious offers, except from the lowly Cards, perennial doormats in the NFL.

Even in Arizona, success never came easily.

“I worked my butt off this year to try to prove they made the right decision, not only this year but when they signed me four years ago,” Warner said, “to try to pay back as much as I can for what they’ve given me.”

Warner was limited by injuries to 10 starts in 2005. In 2006, then-coach Dennis Green made Warner the starter after training camp, but again he was replaced by a rookie—when Matt Leinart took over five games into the season.

Whisenhunt replaced the fired Green in 2007, and Warner had to prove himself all over again.

“This league is so much built on what someone’s perception of you is,” Warner said. “I know that even when this coaching staff came here … that they really felt that this guy is on the tail end of his career, he’s just kind of hanging on.”

Whisenhunt kept Leinart as the starter, but sent Warner into three games to operate a productive, no-huddle offense. Then Leinart went down with a broken collarbone five games into the season, and Warner had the job full time.

He played despite a dislocated elbow in his left, non-throwing arm, earning even more respect from his teammates for his toughness.

Warner threw for 3,417 yards and 27 touchdowns, but at season’s end it was the same old story: Leinart was the starter.

Whisenhunt, though, assured Warner he’d have an opportunity to compete for the job in training camp, and after the final preseason game of 2008, Whisenhunt made Warner the starter.

“It was a week and a day before our first regular-season game,” Whisenhunt said, “and I stayed up all night making the decision. … As I’ve said before, it was a very close competition. It came down to what I felt was the player that gave us the chance to win early.”

Warner found an offensive rhythm with his powerhouse group of receivers and the Cardinals took flight. His statistics this season rival those of his St. Louis days, finishing second in the NFL in completions (401), second in completion percentage (67.1), second in yards passing (4,583) and third in passing touchdowns (30).

And the offense kicked into an even higher gear in the playoffs, with the Cardinals beating Atlanta 30-24, Carolina 33-13 and Philadelphia 32-25.

Steelers safety Ryan Clark calls Warner “one of the most accurate passers in the game right now.”

“A lot of times, Fitzgerald’s covered or Boldin’s covered or Breaston’s covered, he knows exactly the spot to put it where only his receivers could catch the ball,” Clark said.

Warner will make his 20th start of the season on Sunday, the most of his career. As far as his teammates are concerned, he’s already a Hall of Famer.

“I told him after the NFC championship that I just want a ticket to Canton, Ohio, when he gets in,” defensive end Bertrand Berry said. “When you think about what he’s done in his career and what he’s accomplished in his career, to think that there is even a question about whether he’ll be a Hall of Famer or not, to me, is ridiculous.”

Warner’s contract with Arizona ends after the Super Bowl. General manager Rod Graves says Warner wants to come back and the Cardinals want to re-sign him. It’s hard to imagine him not wanting to keep flinging the ball after a season like this.

But Warner also hints at retirement. His wife Brenda would like him at home with their seven children and he’d have more time to work with his First Things First foundation.

It’s a Christian organization to match his faith-based life.

“Everything I do, everywhere I go, I’m trying to live up to or represent Jesus,” Warner said. “Having the faith I have is first and foremost in my life.”

Arizona Cardinal Darnell Dockett’s Amazing Story

Dockett’s Life of Lessons by Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports

Full Link:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=Av0n9vPxx.N2cfId97d68UhDubYF?slug=cr-dockett012809&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

TAMPADarnell Dockett says he would give it all away.

The fame, the house, the money – even the Super Bowl. He’d trade it and be a mechanic or a taxi cab driver. He’d leave it all and go back to Atlanta, where he once stole cars and did all the things he’s raising his son not to do.

He’d let all this go, asking just one thing in return.

“The only thing I would give up all this for is to have my mom back,” Dockett said. “That would be the only thing I would like to have back.”

The 27-year-old Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle has a history as uplifting as it is sad, as genuine as it is hypocritical. From the murder of his mother when he was 13, to the death of his estranged father four months later – and with a childhood pocked with criminal mischief – Dockett’s life transcends the many hard-luck stories found in this sport.

One of this Super Bowl’s most raw, thoughtful, philosophical and truthful personalities, Dockett goes beyond the typical labels of the sport. While some look at him and see one of the NFL’s most talented young defensive players, the measurable parts of his game are easily outweighed by the depths of his story.

“For him to be where he is right now, it took so much courage,” said Cardinals defensive end Antonio Smith, one of Dockett’s closest friends and spiritual confidants. “He’s endured more than most people could ever imagine.”

For Darnell Dockett, there is always a ghost in the room, an apparition that lingers almost 14 years after the murder of his mother. Even now, he seems certain the perpetrator was someone who knew the family, possibly even a person his mother trusted. And he believes the killer is watching him from afar, a familiar face with a secret shame. Maybe he has shaken Dockett’s hand. Maybe he’s been one of the neighborhood acquaintances Dockett might see on the rare occasion he returns to his hometown. Maybe it’s someone far closer to him than even he realizes.

“For like the first five or six years I did [fixate on it],” Dockett said. “I used to always wonder, was it a family member? Was it somebody close to me? Was it somebody I see every now and then? I used to wonder, was it the neighbor? I used to wonder everything, man.”

His mother’s killer perhaps could have been any one of those things. But Cheryl Hambrick’s own demons made the details cloudy. Dockett admits that she used drugs and even sold them from time to time. And there was no denying that questionable characters had been threaded throughout much of her life. But her death whispered of a distinct familiarity.

Dockett said he had spent part of that day – July 4, 1994 – at a friend’s house. Eventually he returned to his mother’s home in Decatur, Ga., finding a front door that was still locked, and an odd quiet when he entered. The circumstances immediately felt wrong, and when he walked in and found his mother, she was laying awkwardly in a hallway of the home, a lifeless body in a blood-soaked T-shirt. She had been killed by a gunshot to her head.

He didn’t react when he saw her. No scream. No rushing to her side. The shock of the scene paralyzed him. He just stood and stared at her in silence, until hearing his older sister at the door of the home. Then he wheeled around and rushed her out before she could see what had happened, and the pair drove to the neighborhood gas station, where they used a pay phone to call police.

For detectives, the scene raised only more questions. There were no signs of a struggle. The door hadn’t been kicked in. By all appearances, Cheryl Hambrick had walked her own killer into the house, before suffering a death that looked like an execution.

For most, it’s a reality that is beyond chilling – even in an NFL locker room, which often is thick with stories of hardship and loss. Experiencing death is one thing, but being a 13-year-old child and finding your mother murdered is almost unimaginable.

“The things he went through in life are horrible,” said Antonio Smith, who has seen his own share of hardship. “No child should have to go through it. No child should have to see what he had to see.”

And certainly, no person should have to carry it through his life. A moment that, despite the coping and the fame and the leaning on God that has followed, still can leave a sliver of angst – a frustration in the knowledge that unless the killer comes forward, the murder likely will remain unsolved.

“It ain’t like one of these channels where I turn on CNN and they’re looking for a little girl for like two years and they’re showing the house and everything,” Dockett said. “They probably look at it like another black person dying in the projects.”

If the murder of his mother were the beginning and end of the story, that would be enough. The outside world would look at Dockett and marvel at how difficult it must have been for him to make it to this point in his life. But Cheryl’s death was only a middle chapter. Four months later, his estranged father Darnell Sr. died of pancreatic cancer, shortly after trying to once again enter his son’s life. Only a few months after burying his mother, Dockett found himself standing at his father’s funeral, feeling little more than the anger of abandonment.

“My pain wouldn’t let me feel for a stranger, because he wasn’t ever there,” Dockett said. “I think that’s the only funeral that I have ever been to that I didn’t even shed a tear.”

But looking back, Dockett can see the deaths of his parents in a more philosophical light. He admits it’s hard to know how his life would have turned out if his mother hadn’t died, or his father hadn’t left the family when Dockett was 5. Certainly he never would have been forced to leave Decatur, which he did shortly after his mother’s death, when his uncle, Kevin Dockett, adopted Darnell and moved him to Burtonsville, Md.

A square-jawed disciplinarian with his own dump-truck operation, it was Kevin who was there to pick up the pieces after the death of Darnell’s parents. Ultimately, he would become the authority in the life of a child who had seen little guidance from a father figure. Kevin would quickly see what it meant to open his arms to a child who by age 13 had been arrested a handful of times for stealing cars, fighting, and generally drumming up chaos in Atlanta.

“Me and some of my bad little friends, we’d done some of everything,” Darnell admits. “We used to get chased by the police. Sometimes we’d do it on purpose just to see if they could catch us.”

He jokes that boosting cars and running from the cops helped him develop his speed, but the humor is tempered with a reality that comes from Kevin’s lips: a message that says Darnell’s current stardom doesn’t forgive his past transgressions. Yet those mistakes are part of him, and he’s not ashamed to admit what he’s done – particularly as the incidents relate to his uncle, who demanded respect and wasn’t afraid to take those demands to a physical level.

“He was a bad kid when I got him, but he didn’t act bad when he first came,” Kevin said. “But it got worse and worse. It was always me talking to him, talking to him, talking to him. Then I was cutting out of work to go to the school because he did something. Eventually, I got tired of talking. So I’d just give him a nice spanking from ‘Hickory.’ “

Hickory was the wooden switch Kevin fashioned himself. And when Darnell fell out of line, Hickory would make an appearance. Eventually, Kevin decided to push Darnell into football, too, hoping the structure and dedicated time would add some discipline to Darnell’s life. After some brief resistance – Darnell quit after his first few practices – his aggression became a tool that adults appreciated. But the success didn’t come without some hurdles.

“I remember the coach, he was like ‘Do you know the three-point stance?’” Darnell said. “I was like ‘No, but I can tell you how to steal a Buick Regal.’”

Despite taking football up relatively late, it didn’t take Dockett long to develop. A slow and out-of-shape eighth grader became a fast and brutal-hitting ninth grader at Burtonsville’s Paint Branch High School. By his sophomore year, he’d gotten his first recruiting letter from the University of Michigan. By the time he was a senior, he had committed to a Florida State program that was a national powerhouse. And for the first time, Kevin could see the seeds of maturity starting to take root.

“Up until he got to Florida State, I made a lot of decisions for him,” Kevin said. “But when it came time to pick a school, I said ‘This is a decision you need to make for yourself.’”

Even now, Kevin can still see the maturity coming. He watched as Darnell got arrested in a shoplifting scam that stained his reputation – a crime that ended with Darnell suspended for a bowl game after his junior season. He watched Darnell, the ACC’s Defensive Player of the Year, slip to the third round of the 2004 draft, partly because of character questions. And he watched Darnell befriend spiritual players with the Cardinals like Antonio Smith, who has played a role in helping Darnell see a much larger picture beyond his life as an athlete.

To some, it could be construed as divinity: a murder that delivered Darnell to his uncle’s steadying hand, a steadying hand that helped deliver him to college football, a college career that helped him meet Smith, and a close friend who has helped him embrace everything that has delivered him to this moment.

And Smith’s influence on Darnell can’t be understated. Dockett has watched his teammate’s strong faith help him through his own struggles, including a spate of family deaths that plagued Smith’s career with the Cardinals. And he’s been exposed to Smith’s philosophy of making his family the center of his universe.

“I feel like my job is to help Darnell be grateful through life,” Smith said. “I just think that throughout his life, for him to be where he is now, it took a lot of heart. But you’ve still got to be grateful for everything that the Lord gives you. That’s one thing that I try instill in him. I tell him ‘You are so blessed. Don’t just focus on the negative. Focus on the positive.’”

And as Darnell has matured, his uncle said he’s seen Smith’s influence help shape his nephew.

“He’s been maturing that way ever since he got into the league,” Kevin said. “He’s listening to other guys in the league and seeing other guys do bad things, and he’s always saying ‘I would never do that.’ I’ve seen a lot of growth in him in the last five years. But better than that, I’ve seen a lot of growth in him ever since I’ve had him come live with me.”

That growth has included forgiving his father’s abandonment and his mother’s murderer. And while he’d still like to know why his mother was killed – “Just to get the demons out,” he says – Darnell has realized his own personal growth had much to do with that moment. It doesn’t necessarily make his mother’s loss easier. He still thinks about her, still imagines that she plays a role in his life. And still thinks about how he could have changed hers.

“Sometimes on Christmas, on Mother’s Day, when I got drafted, when I signed a new contract – those days I wish I could be like ‘Here Mom, here’s your Mercedes Benz outside’, or ‘Here’s your new house. You don’t got to live in the projects anymore. You don’t have to go to the grocery store with $20 to try to feed three kids,’” Darnell said. “I feel like I could have been a good man in my mom’s life.”

Instead, he has traded that opportunity for another: the chance to be a good man in the life of his two-year-old son, Dillon.

“When I do tell the story [of my life], I’m going to tell him everything,” Darnell said. “I’m not going to leave anything out. I’m going to tell him ‘As your dad, I’m never going to leave you. There’s nothing me and your mom can go through to make me leave you. I’m always going to be a father to you.’ I think that’s what my dad should have done when he was younger.”

Maybe he’ll tell his son about how some of the best people can only be found after being preyed upon by some of the worst. Or how some of the best things in life can be reached only after enduring some of the worst. Surely he’ll tell him that strength can come from the cruelest of places.

What Dockett won’t do is lament where he’s been, or how he’s gotten to this point.

As he said this week, “My pain and my tears are gone. I’ve done shed enough of them.”

SUPER BOWL PREDICTION (2008 NFL Season Predictions)

CARDINALS over STEELERS

WHY: Two words might be enough if those two words are “Larry Fitzgerald” but that would be taking the easy road.

I honestly feel that Pittsburgh is the better football team and that if these teams played a full 16 game season against each other Pittsburgh would win at least 10 of those games. However, the regular season doesn’t matter now and this is a one game playoff for all the marbles and under these circumstances, I like Arizona in a pretty big upset.

While I feel that the Steelers defense will be able to frustrate, if not shut down the Cardinals running game (though I still think Edge will have a semi-decent game), and while I feel they will also be able to run and pass effectively on the Cardinals defense, I do not think they will be able to slow down the Cardinals high powered passing attack. They may have been #1 against the pass in the regular season, but do not be shocked to see Kurt Warner have a huge game against them in the Super Bowl. I also do not think Big Ben Rothlisberger will be able to stay turnover free against the Cards opportunistic defense and wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him throw a pick or two, especially if Hines Ward is limited physically as he was against the Ravens.

I will issue a cautionary warning however. Pittsburgh could turn this into a rout early! If the Steelers get up by two scores and turn the Cardinals into a one-dimensional team, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Troy Palamalu, James Harrison, et all turn this into a defensive clinic and create all sorts of havoc for Warner, Fitzgerald and the troops.

Personally what I see happening is the Cardinals scoring first and putting the pressure on Big Ben to try and win the game with his arm, which he will not be successful in doing. The Steelers will move the ball effectively and will have a lot of solid opportunities to score but turnovers and settling for field goals rather then TD’S will be their downfall.

After saying all this, I should probably admit that the real reason I’m picking the Cardinals to win over the heavily favored Steelers is because all the other “experts” are picking the Steelers and since I am “tied” with Michael Silver on our picks and I would rather have a 50/50 shot at winning then a 100% shot at tying for the lead. I’ll take the Cardinals and let him play it safe with the Steelers.

Cardinals by two!

Score: 26-24

Conference Championship Playoff Record:  2-0 (I had a feeling that Brian Westbrook being dinged up would be a big deal and I was right. Oh yeah, and having Larry Fitzgerald torching the Eagles secondary had a lot to do with the Cardinals winning too :-) As for the Steelers, they were simply the better football team and they showed it. Nuff said.)

Record to Date: 171-94 (Leading the pack feels good!)

Conference Championship Playoff Predictions (2008 NFL Season Predictions)

CARDINALS over EAGLES

WHY: After picking both the Cardinals and Eagles to lose on the road but being thrilled that they both won, the NFC title game will be a great game for me. I really don’t care who wins as these are two of my favorite teams and I’ll be thrilled if either beat the Steelers in the Super Bowl, though to be honest I like the Steelers and am a huge Big Ben fan as well.

Anyways, this is a tough game to call. The Cardinals defense has been playing out of their mind the last two weeks and the Eagles defense is always a nightmare to face. There is no clear QB advantage and while Westbrook is more dynamic then anyone the Cards have in the running game, the duo of Edge and Hightower has been solid the past two weeks against solid defensive lines.

With all of that said, I’m going to have to go with the Cardinals. If they could shut down the high powered Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers running games, they should be able to at least contain a dinged up Brian Westbrook and force the Eagles to be a pass-happy team (not that Andy Reid isn’t comfortable as such). Cardinals by 3.

Score: 27-24

STEELERS over RAVENS

WHY: I could take the easy way out and say the Steelers are going to win due to home field advantage but that would be a cop out. The fact is I simply think the Steelers are a better team and would find a way to beat the Ravens in the Steel city, on a neutral field or even if the game were being played in Baltimore. Big Ben is a better QB then Joe Flacco at this point in his career, the trio of Willie Parker-Mewelde Moore and Gary Russel is more effective then the McGahee-McClain duo, the Steelers receivers are better then the Ravens and, dare I say it, the Steelers defense is flat out better too!

Not much more to say then that. Steelers by 11.

Score: 20-9

Divisional Playoff Record:  2-2 (This week should be fun. I’m a fan of all 4 teams and really wouldn’t mind seeing any combination of these teams playing the SB this year. An all Pennsylvania SB would be great. A Steelers vs. Cardinals and former coordinators Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm would be interesting. An Eagles vs. Ravens SB would be a slug fest that would probably produce Asante Samuel’s 5th career playoff interception return for a TD and a Ravens vs. Cardinals SB would be the classic offense vs. defense extravaganza. )

Record to Date: 169-94 (Leading the pack feels good!)

Conference Semi-Finals Playoff Predictions (2008 NFL Season Predictions)

GIANTS over EAGLES

WHY: After calling a 27-16 victory for the Eagles over the Vikings that was in reality a 26-14 victory, I feel pretty good about judging the ability of this Eagles team. That said, I can easily see them defeating the defending champion Giants, even in New York. However, for this to happen, McNabb will have to stay turnover free, the Eagles will need to harass Eli Manning and they will need to let Westbrook run the ball at least 20 times. If those three things happen I like the Eagles by 4 points. However, I think only two of those three things will happen and therefore I’ll take the Giants by a field goal.

Score: 23-20

PANTHERS over CARDINALS

WHY: After calling a 30-26 victory for the Cards over the Falcons that was in reality a 30-24 victory, I feel pretty good about judging the ability of this Cards team. That said, I don’t feel they have the ability to go on the road and win a game against a tough and disciplined Panthers team. If this turns into a no-defense shoot-out, I like the Cards chances but don’t count on that happening with stud defenders like Julius Peppers and Jon Beason around.

If this game were being played in Zona I would take the Cards by 3, if it was on a neautral field I would take the Panthers by 3, but since it’s in Carolina, I will take the Panthers by 10.

Score: 30-20

STEELERS over CHARGERS

WHY: Three words: Home field advantage. These two teams are very evenly matched and if L.T. and Antonio Gates were feeling 100%, let alone Shawne Merriman I would not hesitate to take the Chargers, even in Heinz Field, however they aren’t and I’m not. Look for a low scoring, hard-hitting slugfest and don’t be surprised to see little man Sproles KO’D at some point in this game.

Score: 16-13

RAVENS over TITANS

Why: After calling a 23-9 victory for the Ravens over the Dolphins that was in reality a 27-9 victory, I also feel pretty good about judging the ability of this Ravens team. That said, I feel pretty confident that the Ravens can knock out the Titans, even in Nashville. Look for Kerry Collins to perform about as well as Chad Pennington after the Titans vaunted Smash & Dash running game gets pummeled by Ray Lewis & Co. On the flip side, look for the Ravens offense to sputter nearly as badly. The key word there: nearly.

Score: 16-13

Divisional Playoff Record:  3-1 (Woooo, it looks like after the first round of the playoffs, Michael Silver and I are not tied again … and this time with Vinnie Iyer (who was ahead of me by a ton earlier in the season) as well … 3 weeks left to go; this should be fun!)

Record to Date: 167-92 (I believe my ability to be so accurate with my predictions is due to the fact that  don’t make emotional picks and I have not done so this week, hence the Giants and Panthers pick. Let’s just say that while I want all my predictions to come true I sure wouldn’t be upset if the Eagles and Cardinals pulled the upsets!)

THE GREAT NFL M.V.P. DEBATE

M.V.P.: Philip Rivers

Why: Check the stats people. Philip Rivers had a better season then Peyton Manning by far. He threw for 7 more TD’S and 1 less interception, had a QB rating more then 10 points higher and even threw for more yards despite being sacked 11 more times and playing with less surrounding talent. Yes, I understand that Peyton had a better win/loss record, but what good did that do him, he still has to go play against Rivers and the Chargers in San Diego, due to the NFL not catching up with the NBA and giving home field advantage to the better team.

Runner-Up: Peyton Manning

Why: Peyton will win the award, make no mistake about it and while I don’t feel he deserves it over Rivers, he still deserves to win the award. Without Manning the Colts would have been a 4-5 win team this season and this may have been Peyton’s finest performance ever, all things considered.

3rd: Kurt Warner

Why: Warner was thee reason the Cardinals won their first division title since the beginning of time this season and truth be told may be the most “valuable” player to his team of any guy on this list as the offense revolved around Warner and the running game was basically non-existent all year long.

4th: Chad Pennington

Why: After winning his second “Comeback Player of the Year” award, Mr. Pennington also deserves consideration for his first M.V.P. trophy. The careful quarterback from Marshall University was the steadying force the talent bare Dolphins needed to win their division over the talent laden New England Patriots. By the way read that sentence again and please realize that there is absolutely no way Bill Belichick should receive more votes then Tony Sparano for the Coach of the Year award.

5th: Adrian Peterson

Why: Adrian “All Day” Peterson was the Minnesota Vikings offense this year and led the league in rushing yards despite facing opposing defenses geared to stop him. Adrian is the best pure runner in the game, a title that such greats as Gale Sayers and Barry Sanders held, but he is not the most complete back in the game and had far to many fumbles to win this award this year. By the way, after the Vikings get eliminated from the Playoffs by the Eagles, the brass should have their heads examined if they don’t consider firing coach Brad Childress and replacing him with the now out of work Mike Shanahan!

Honorable Mention: Deangelo Williams

Why: No other running back in the league compares better to the unforgettable Barry Sanders then mighty mite Deangelo. Williams rushed for over 1,500 yards and scored 20 total TD’S on a team without a truly threatening passing game and lead the Panthers to the #2 in the NFC. For that Mr. Williams deserves an honorable mention … and a huge new contract!

Divisional Playoff Predictions (2008 NFL Season Predictions)

EAGLES over VIKINGS

WHY: McNabb or Tavaris Jackson, McNabb or Tavaris Jackson, hmmmm, let me think about that for a second.

Score: 27-16

FALCONS over CARDINALS

WHY: The Falcons are a better football team then the Cardinals and if this game were being played in Atlanta as it should be, I would pick the Falcons by at least 10 points, however the Cardinals play lights-out at home and Matt Ryan is making his first ever playoff start against a two-time MVP and SuperBowl QB in Kurt Warner. Advantage? Warner

Score: 30-26

COLTS over CHARGERS

WHY: Two words: Peyton Manning.

Score: 31-27

RAVENS over DOLPHINS

Why: The Ravens are simply to physical for the Dolphins and it wouldn’t be all that shocking if the Ravens defense scored more points then the Dolphins offense. However, if Joe Flacco plays like a stary eyed rookie and the Dolphins win the turnover battle, the Dolphins could pull this one out.

Score: 23-9

Week Seventeen Record: 11-5 (I wanted to wait until just minutes before the Boys-Eagles game to pick that one and would have definitely picked the Eagles with the Bucs losing but since everyone else picked the games a day in advance, I did too, ah well, 11-5 ain’t bad.)

Record to Date: 164-91 (Down by one to yahoo expert Michael Silver with only the playoffs to go … should be fun! Go Eagles!)

Goodbye Z-Bo and Creezy, Hello Lebron?

Finally we have some NBA trade news to talk about!

The N.Y. Knicks, who everyone knows are in full pursuit of Lebron James, traded their best player today … for … garbage!

The Knicks traded Zach Randolph, a player that was on pace to not only make the All-Star team, but lead the Knicks to the playoffs and probably finish in the top 10 in MVP voting in doing so. What did they get for him? Tim “I’m still all about potential even though I’m 65 years old” Thomas and Cuttino “I’m nothing without Stevie Franchise” Mobley, yup, that’s all.

Now, I am all for the Knicks dumping salary to make a legit run at landing King James as a free agent come 2010, or a Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Yao Ming, etc if that plan fails. However, I can’t believe this is the best they could have received for Z-Bo.

There was a rumor that the Cavs had interest and a package of Wally Sczerbiak and a #1 pick would have been a solid trade for both sides. However, to be honest, if the Knicks were willing to give Zach up for TT and Cat Mobley, they could have just traded him to the Cavs straight up for Ben “I still have the fro if not game” Wallace and done better. How you ask? Because this would have probably guarenteed the Cavs an Eastern Conference championship and at the same time taken grumpy Mr. Wallace off of Lebron’s hands. You don’t think LBJ would remember the favor the Knicks brass did him when 2010 rolls around? I think he would!

Alas, all the Knicks got for Z-Bo was a shot chucking bust and a smallish off guard to watch another smallish off guard (Nate Robinson) play. Now, had they at least received Deandre Jordan and a 2nd round pick or two, I would actually be appluading the trade.

One curious question. What are the Clippers doing? Not to rain on their parade today but Z-Bo is not going to transform them into title contenders, though they are now certainly a top 9 Western team, ahead of the Mavs, and a serious playoff contender. This trade also pretty much assurs they will not be players in the King James sweepstakes come 2010 and that is a shame as they had the tools to make a run at Lebron as much as any other team.

The Knicks also traded Jamaal Crawford and Mardy Collins for Al Harrington which was a solid trade for both teams, though I am a bit disappointed that Donnie Walsh could’t pry Marco Belinelli away from the Warriors in this trade as well. Marco would have been a great fit in D’Anotni’s system and would have helped first round draft pick Danilo Gallinari’s confidence and overall understanding of things as well, both being from Italy.

However, there is good news. The Knicks are definitely leading the Lebron chase (no way is he going to the Pistons), though I would not be at all surprised to see the Lakers end up landing him by not only offering him the best chance to win but by being the one team that can work a S&T with the Cavs to land the King. Cleveland brass would be insane to pass up a Pau Gasol, Sasha Vujacic and picks trade package for Lebron, only to watch him land on the Knicks for nothing!

By the way, that aforementioned Gasol, Vujacic and picks package would still enable the Lakers to file a starting lineup as follows:

PG: Jordan Farmar

SG: Kobe Bryant

SF: Lebron James

PF: Lamar Odom

C: Andrew Bynum

Now that is a team to win “multiple championships” with!

Back to the Knicks … the question now is: who is going to acquire the David Lee/Jared Jefferies combo as that is obviously the next trade Donnie Walsh will be looking to make and once he is free of Jared Jeffries contract, he will be completely in the clear and fully entrenched in a “Let’s wait for Lebron to land in our lap” mode.

Here are the top contenders to land the David Lee / Jared Jeffries tandem:

Dallas: Jerry Stackhouse and a 1st round pick should do it

OKC: Chris Wilcox and a couple 2nd round picks would be nice

SACRAMENTO: Kenny Thomas or SAR and a couple 2nd round picks would work

ORLANDO: Battie, Foyle and a 1st round pick would work for both teams

MILWAUKEE: Ridnour and a lottery protected #1 makes a lot of sense for both squads

2008 NFL QUARTER-SEASON REVIEW & PREDICTIONS:

GOOD SURPRISE TEAM: Buffalo Bills (4—0) The Bills are the darlings of the NFL right now and look like a legitimate Division Champion in the making. The offensive quadruplet of Trent Edwards, Marshawn Lynch, Lee Evans and James Hardy looks like a young, modern day version of Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin and Alvin Harper.

BAD SURPRISE TEAM: Cincinnati Bengals (0-4) What a complete disappointment! This team is heading for a top 3 pick in the draft and should trade Chad Ocho Cinco to the Cowboys before his trade value drops even further. If Marvin Lewis isn’t fired this offseason, the Bengals must be secretly owned by the Ford family of Detroit.

GOOD LUCK TEAM: Denver Broncos (3-1) The Broncos could very easily be 1-3, rather then 3-1. The Broncos should be good for a division title this year but don’t count on them playing the Super Bowl until they get their defense shored up.

BAD LUCK TEAM: New England Patriots (2-1) Anytime you lose the defending MVP of the league and go from a sure fire Super Bowl team to a possible playoff contender, you’ve had some seemingly horrendous luck! Personally I don’t see them making the playoffs this season.

PREDICTED AFC DIVISION CHAMPS: Titans, Broncos, Steelers, Jets

PREDICTED AFC WILD CARDS: Colts, Bills

PREDICTED AFC CHAMP: Colts

PREDICTED NFC DIVISION CHAMPS: Redskins, Panthers, Cardinals, Bears

PREDICTED NFC WILD CARDS: Eagles, Cowboys

PREDICTED NFC CHAMP: Cowboys

GOOD SURPRISE PLAYER: Chris Johnson. Most folks expected Johnson to be an electrifying little player but no one expected to him be the Titans team MVP after 4 games, nor to be on pace to rush for nearly 1,400 yards. What a dynamo!

BAD SURPRISE PLAYER: Chad Ocho Cinco. Mr. Incognito is on pace to haul in 44 passes for 464 yards and 4 TD’S. If the Bengals are smart they will trade him to the Cowboys, Jets, Titans or Seahawks ASAP.

PREDICTED MVP (in order): Cutler, Brees, Romo, Warner, McNabb and Favre

DPOY: Albert Haynesworth

ROY: Chris Johnson

DROY: Keith Rivers

COMEBACK POY: Aaron Rodgers

COY: Jeff Fisher

TOM BRADY OUT … DAUNTE CULPEPPER IN?

The New England Patriots are finished.

Has such a sentence ever been written so soon about a team that went 18-1 last season and was expected to win the this year? Probably not. However, Tom Brady meant more to this team then most people would like to admit and with him apparently sidelined for the rest of the season, the New England Patriots are in serious trouble of missing out on the playoffs altogether.

While Matt Cassel is a capable back-up QB and could probably throw for around 2,800 yards and 18 TD’S over the next 15 games, that is not enough to win more then 9 games and probably would only be good enough to finish with an 8-8 record.

The Patriots need a true starting QB, and I am not talking about Vinny Testeverde! They need a former gun slinger, a former MVP candidate, they need Daunte Culpepper!

Culpepper was an absolute beast during his years with Randy Moss in Minnesota and played at an MVP level in 2004 as well. That year the 6′4, 265 lb mammoth QB combined for 5,123 total yards rushing and passing to go along with an amazing 41 combined TD’S and just 11 interceptions, while also completing 69.2% of his passes and registering a 110.9 QB rating. If you don’t think those are some amazing stats, go ahead and compare them to some of the best season stats of Joe Montana, Dan marino, John Elway, etc and you will no doubt be impressed.

The big knock on Culpepper is that since his serious injury the following season he has not been able to play at a high level and while it is true that in his last 18 games he has only accounted for a total of 18 TD’S while throwing 20 INT’S, one must understand that he did so playing for some severly offensively talent bare teams in Moss-less Minnesota, horrendous Miami and atrocious Oakland!

In fact a closer look will reveal that in his last 11 games, which were played in offensively challenged Miami and Oakland, Culpepper was quite a solid QB. His stats, if expanded over a full 16 game season, look pretty good compared to what most are expecting from Matt Cassel. Over a 16 game season Culpepper would complete 59.1% of his passes for 3,375 combined yards, 16 combined TD’S and under 12 INT’S with a QB rating over 77.0. If Culpepper could put up those solid stats with the talent deprived receiving corps and offensive linbes of the Dolphins and Raiders, it is not out of the question that he could post an average of 4,000 yards and 30 TD’S with a group like the Patriots have!

Culpepper to Moss may be just around the corner!

OTHER POTENTIAL “Win-Now” REPLACEMENTS FOR TOM BRADY (In order of effectiveness):

Steve McNair

Byron Leftwich

Jon Kitna

Brian Griese

Mark Brunell

Rex Grossman

AFC East Team Season Previews

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

The Patriots are coming off perhaps the greatest season in NFL history as well as the most heart-breaking season in NFL history. After going 18-0 in what was dubbed as some as the Patriots Revenge Tour they were defeated by the plucky New York Giants and you can bet that going 18-1 and not winning another Super Bowl ring meant little more to Bill Belichick then going 1-15. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the old coach would have rather gone 1-15 as at least then he would have had a #1 pick to work with. You see, the Patriots are an organization that is built to win now and has little tolerance for anything but a season that ends with them holding a Super Bowl trophy.

All of the above being said, look for the Patriots Revenge Tour Part II to be a smashing success, complete with a myriad of blowouts, amazing player stats and a return trip to the Super Bowl, where they will win.

Offensive Player to Watch for:

Tom Brady (With all due respect to Randy Moss who certainly makes Brady a better QB, this team can not win a title without Brady behind center. I don’t believe he’ll come close to his record smashing 2007 stats, but he will be as reliable as ever and bring the Patriots that elusive fourth Super Bowl trophy.)

Defensive Player to Watch for:

Jerod Mayo (The heralded rookie linebacker will need to come up big, especially if Junior Seau does not return, if the Patriots hope to field an intimidating defense to match their record setting offense. Personally, I think Mayo will be a standout in year one.)

Breakout Player to Watch For:

Laurence Maroney (This kid has all the tools to be one of the best backs in the league and I predict this will be a breakout year for the former Golden Gopher. Look for Maroney to rush for around 1,600 yards and 12+ touchdowns on his way to his first Pro Bowl berth.)

Projection: 14-2, Super Bowl Champs

NEW YORK JETS

The Jets are coming off a horrible 2007 and were expected to finish near the bottom of the AFC once again, until they started spending crazy amounts of cash and deciding they would rather win now, then bank on a future of Kellen Clemens. They not only acquired All-Pro guard Alan Faneca, OL Damien Woody, FB Tony Richardson and DT Kris Jenkins, along with impact draft picks like DE Vernon Gholston and TE Dustin Keller, but they traded for all-time great QB Brett Favre and brought along his buddy, TE Bubba Franks. The Jets are ready to win now and should do so, to the tune of 9-11 wins this season and a playoff berth.

Offensive Player to Watch for:

Brett Favre (This is obvious. Look for Brett to put up over 3,600 yards and 24 TD’s while leading his team to the playoffs, ala Joe Montana for the KC Chiefs after he was traded from the 49’ers.)

Defensive Player to Watch for:

Vernon Gholston (This kid has all the talent in the world and the potential to be an All-Pro in the Jets system. However, he is also a bit green and prone to disappearing acts, so patience may be necessary. I predict he will have 8+ sacks and help lead the Jets to the playoffs.)

Breakout Player to Watch For:

Jerricho Cotchery (After catching 82 balls for 1,130 yards and 2 touchdowns in 2007, expect his stats to go up across the board with the strong armed Breet favre throwing to him, especially the TD numbers. I look for Jerricho to haul in 90+ passes for 1,300+ yards and 8+ TD’S in 2008.)

Projection: 9-7, First Round Playoff Exit

BUFFALO BILLS

The Bills are coming off a disappointing season record wise, but one that was filled with promise as young studs, Marshawn Lynch and Trent Edwards showed they could turn out to be great pros and lead this team back to the playoffs in a few short years. This 2008 season should be another season filled with losses and team growth, and end with another high draft pick to build for the future.

Offensive Player to Watch for:

Marshawn Lynch (After an extremely successful rookie season saw Lynch rush for 1,115 yards and 7 TD’S you can expect those numbers to increase to over 1,300 yards and 9 TD’S in his second season.)

Defensive Player to Watch for:

Leodis Mckelvin (This kid has the tools to become a shut down corner and should have a successful rookie campaign with a pretty high number of interceptions.)

Breakout Player to Watch For:

James Hardy (The rookie WR out of Indiana has the height to scare the wits out of smaller corners and the skills to be a go-to receiver. Look for Hardy to lead the team in TD receptions in his first season.)

Projection: 5-11

MIAMI DOLPHINS

The Dolphins were absolutely embarrassed by their performance last season, so much so that they hired the coaching legend Bill Parcells to come to their rescue. While putting the Big Tuna in charge should surely improve their measly win total from last season it should not be enough to make this talent bare team a serious playoff contender in 2008. You can expect another last place finish and a high draft pick (professing Christian and Heisman trophy winning QB Tim Tebow anyone?).

Offensive Player to Watch for:

Tim Tebow (Yeah, I know he doesn’t play for the Dolphins or even in the NFL, but this kid could be the Dolphins #1 pick in 2009 and he is a whole lot more fun to watch then anyone the Dolphins can put on the field.)

Defensive Player to Watch for:

Phillip Merling (The rookie DE out of Clemson has some huge shoes to fill with the departure of Jason Taylor to the Redskins. Expect this kid to be a stud from game 1 and record a pretty high number of sacks.)

Breakout Player to Watch For:

Ricky Williams (Ricky may have issues but he is also the best football player the Dolphins have and I fully expect him to rush for 1,300+ yards and 10+ TD’S in 2008.)

Projection: 4-12
